Functional skills

Functional skills, also known as ‘Skills for Life’ are the fundamental, applied skills in English, Maths and Digital which help people gain the most from life, learning and working.

Functional skills are available at the following levels

Functional Skills Level Equivalent GCSE (Old Grading) Equivalent GCSE (New Grading)

Entry 1
Entry 2
Entry 3

GCSE below G grade Below Level 1

Level 1

GCSE D - G Level 1 - 3

Level 2

GCSE A* - C Level 4 - 9

Functional skills qualifications allow people to study in practical ways; applying key skills to actual situations so that the things they learn come in useful every day, at work or home.

Functional Skills Maths and English form part of all apprenticeship standards, although learners who already have obtained the level required by the apprenticeship will be exempt from undertaking them. Similarly there are some qualifications which are classed as equivalent.

Currently, Frimley Health delivers Functional Skills in English, Maths and Digital through various providers across the year - these programmes are being delivered virtually at this moment in time.
