Public health

Public health contributes to reducing the wider factors, such as health and environmental issues that may impact on people’s health and wellbeing, by improving, protecting and ensuring better and accessible health services for individuals, communities and the population.

There are three domains in public health:

• Health protection
• Health improvement
• Healthcare public health

Public health professionals play an important and critical role by giving practical advice as well as treat or support individuals, families and communities.

There are many career paths and opportunities; below are some examples of the types of roles available in public health:

• Health trainer or health & wellbeing worker
• Public health nurse or school nurse
• Health visitor
• Occupational health nurse
• Public health practioner

It is possible to enter at any level with the appropriate employment, qualifications, skills and/or experience.
